Day 22 - Cairns to Townsville, by Tilly

This morning I woke up and Dad was a bit disappointed that we didn’t catch anyone with the tripwire last night.
Actually I just read Jess’ blog and saw that it was only four lines long. She missed a few important details. The night before last, I was sleeping in my swag with the fly screen over my face so I could still see outside. Throughout the night there were people walking around the place and at one stage I heard a black women yelling out to a black man, but I couldn’t understand what they were saying because it was in their own language. Then she came up and knocked on the door, which was when I sat up. If I was thinking straight I wouldn’t have sat up so quickly because I was lucky she didn’t see me. She waited a minute for someone to open the door, but then looked at the tressle table and walked off. We figured the next day that she was satisfied with Dad’s VBs that were in the table and took then instead of waiting for someone to open the door. So the next day we put a tripwire around the horse float.

After realising we didn’t catch anyone, we waiting for the washing machine to finish, then made it out of the caravan park a few minutes before we were charged another day.

We stopped at the Maccas in Cairns to get some breakfast, then we kept driving. As we were driving out of town, we drove past a big Marlin.

Our first stop was at a place called Cardwell. We stopped there because there were markets near the beach and it looked pretty cool. The markets were pretty dodgy, but there were some nice shops near them. Dad got another coffee, then we kept driving onto Townsville.

On our way to Townsville, we had a quick stop at a lookout of Hinchinbrook Island, which was worth stopping for.

We eventually made it to the Townsville Big4 caravan park, where we set up camp. We weren’t planning to go to the V8 races, but our new neighbours told us that we should because it’s a free entry now (no one is at the gate) and we will get there in time for the truck races. They told us to park in front of the Ross Island pub because that’s about as close as we’d get. It was a long walk over to the races, but we could hear the cars zinging past. We found that we could have driven the car right up to the gates, which were closed, and there were no truck races. It was just finishing as we got there. So instead, we had a quick play on the playground and kept going to meet the Watkins’ from Walla who now live in Townsville. This was about as much of the races that we saw:

It was a bit confusing trying to find the Watkins’, so they eventually told us to stay where we were and they’d find us. Once they found us, we went and had tea at a pub, then us kids walked down the street a bit where we had ice creams and it was nice to see them again. It was a bit weird because you’re meant to wear masks whenever you’re inside, but you don’t need them when you’re eating. We pretty much walked in with our masks on, then took them off when we sat down.

After tea we all went back home, had a shower and are now heading off to bed.
Goodnight.
