Day 28 Broome to Manning Gorge. By Caroline

We left the float at Broome this morning and headed North East.  Our first stop was Derby.
First we had a look at the town of Derby, which didn't take long. We found a place on the warf that Danny and Bill want to come back to tomorrow night to try to catch some mud crabs.

We saw the boab prison tree, where they used to hold prisoners overnight. We also saw what is thought to be the longest cattle trough in the Southern Hemisphere, and an old bath where the drovers used to clean themselves.

We then started on the Western side of the Gibb River Road, and drove to tunnel creek. The walk along Tunnel creek was fun.  We had to walk through knee deep icy cold water. There were bats, fresh water crocs ( we only heard about these, we didn't actually see them, despite trying very hard ), and stallegtights ( or stallegmightes - whichever ones hang from the roof )

Next we drove to Windjana gorge, and did a quick walk through this.

It was very pretty with lots of freshwater crocs, like this little poser:

Now we are trying to get to Mount Barnette Roadhouse, before we run out of fuel.  We have already run out of daylight. I think I am the only one who is a bit nervous about this.

We made it to Mount Barnette, and we can see the bowser, but it is closed. There are no lights on anywhere, and no signs of life anywhere except for across the road, so we drive over, and pretty soon realise that we are somewhere where we shouldn't be. ( from the dogs, the cars with no wheels and the shouting ), so Danny drives us down a dirt road, that seems to go forever in the dark, with only one hand written 40k sign on it.  By this stage, Donk is making some strange noises,  and I think that even Danny is starting to get a bit nervous. Despite my repeated suggestions to just pull over and call it a day, he keeps driving until we start to smell smoke, then finally we see some lights.  We are welcomed by a man called Glen ( who reminds me of the man from Wolfe Creek )  and he says that we have arrived at Manning Gorge. We camp here for the night and wake up safely on Friday morning.
